How Do You Prevent Animal Wildlife Pests From Entering Your Home Or Business?

How do I keep animal wildlife pests from entering my home or business?

prevent animal wildlife pestsWe are often asked by our customers, “How do I keep animals from entering and causing damage to my home?” Many times animal pests enter Richmond, Virginia homes and businesses through weakened or damaged areas. These areas are often the result of storm damage, poor workmanship during construction or remodeling, or simple homeowner neglect of routine home maintenance.

To minimize the possibility of animals entering your Richmond or Charlottesville, VA home and causing further damage to your home’s attic, walls, roof, insulation, wiring, fascia, crawlspace, vents and soffit we recommend that homeowner’s perform an inspection of their home or business twice a year, once just before Spring when newborn animals are typically born, and once in the Fall when animals are looking for Winter denning sites.

By simply taking a pen and paper — or even better, a digital camera — Richmond and Charlottesville, VA home owner’s should examine the entire house and look for signs of loose or missing siding, peeling paint and damaged wood, loose fitting soffits and fascia, cracks in masonry, crawlspace access doors that are missing or will not close properly, and any other problems that animals can exploit to gain entry to your Richmond or Charlottesville Virginia home and cause additional damage. Also look for places where critters such as rats or mice could burrow under the siding or gnaw at the siding or foundation coating. Loose siding needs to be reattached before it rips free and pulls other pieces with it. Wood and masonry siding can be easily reattached and nailed in place; vinyl needs a special siding tool that pulls the lip on one panel over the piece below it to lock the pieces together. Rotting or damaged wood should be replaced. Peeling paint needs to be scraped off before you repaint. Because of the danger of falling, homeowners should stay off the roof and leave that type of work to the professionals. Roof work is too dangerous for novices to walk around up there. Instead, you should examine the roof from the ground using binoculars to look for missing, curling or damaged shingles. Also look for mold or fungus growing on shingles, which discolors them and lessens the life expectancy of the roof. Mold or fungus can be washed off, but, again, this is a job best left to professions.

If an animal damages or enters your Richmond or Charlottesville, Virginia home or business you should contact a professional animal wildlife removal company. Our Richmond and Charlottesville, VA Animal Removal and Wildlife Control Experts provide full-service nuisance animal control services throughout the Richmond and Charlottesville Virginia area. Wildlife Control operators can get rid of all types of nuisance wild animal including the removal and control of such animals as Birds, Bats, Bees, Squirrels, Groundhogs, Snakes, Mice, Skunks, Raccoons, Possums, and Rats. Raccoon Roundworm in Richmond and Charlottesville | Raccoon Trapping, Control and Removal

Raccoon Roundworm

Baylisascaris procyonis (BP) – also known as Raccoon Roundworm is the common roundworm of raccoons in Richmond and Charlottesville, Virginia. Adult BP live in the small intestine of this host, where they produce eggs that are passed in the feces. BP eggs ingested by hatch in the intestine, producing larvae that can migrate widely, causing serious intestinal, eye, or nerve damage. Cases of nerve damage in humans caused by BP likely acquired from raccoons have resulted in severe encephalitis with permanent deficits and in death. Although raccoons are the most common definitive host of BP in North America, some other carnivores, including domestic dogs, can serve as definitive hosts, making them a potential source of human disease. Less well-documented is infection in procyonids other than raccoons. Avoiding contact with feces from potentially infected animals and routine deworming of pets, including dogs and exotic species that might host this parasite, will prevent infection with BP. Our Wildlife Removal Technicians are trained to safely remove and dispose of the primary mechanism for transporting Raccoon Roundworm – the feces of raccoons. Raccoons create toilet areas in attics and other areas of your home. These piles of raccoon feces can pose a significant health risk to you and your family and should only be removed by professionals who are trained and equipped to address this problem. Raccoon feces in your home also contaminates insulation, damages sheet rock and produces unpleasant odors in your home.

We provide humane, fast and efficient trapping, control, exclusion and removal of all species of nuisance animal wildlife pests in Richmond and Charlottesville, VA. Opossums in Richmond and Charlottesville, VA | Trapping | Removal | Control & Exclusion

Opossum Removal In Virginia

(434) 270-0488 or toll-free at (888) 893-1975

Opossum Removal. The opossum (Didelphid virginiana) is definitely the only marsupial in Richmond and Charlottesville Virginia which is a distant relative with the kangaroo. The most known similarity for these close relatives is definitely the female opossum’s abdominal pouch intended for carrying and nurturing young. Unlike its relative, though, the opossum is really a sluggish animal which has a repulsive smell.

Adult opossums in Richmond and Charlottesville are around the proportions of a big cat. They’ve long, light gray hair which includes a scaly tail of approximately one foot. Typically, the opossum likes to start a home within existing structures like hollow logs, garages, under buildings, inside burrows, as well as squirrels’ nests in trees. It likes establishing residence in close proximity to a food source with an easy commute. The opossum is definitely an omnivore, so it’s not picky. Almost anything the marsupial are able to find to eat is likely to make for a meal – fruits, grass, insects, mammals, birds, fish, and carrion. They’re proven to damage Richmond and Charlottesville lawns, too, when digging for grubs.

Opossums aren’t community creatures. Typically, they reproduce once each year but sometimes have two litters producing about 7 offspring each. The count may go up to 13 in the litter, though. Gestation lasts only 13 days, and newborns are merely the dimensions of small bumble bees and partially developed. The young will nurse within the mother’s pouch for the following 3 months while they further develop and mature.

The best approach to get rid of or prevent an infestation by opossums is by exclusionary techniques. Ensure that there aren’t any holes, cracks, or damage of any kind where an opossum could access permanent structures like garage, house, basement, barn, shed, etc. Just before installing a procedure for closure, inspect the premises for infestation. Before you take control measures, check local regulations as opossums may be protected. In the event you aren’t certain of the infesting pest or that you could humanely capture it, we always recommend contacting a pest control management professional like Virginia Professional Wildlife Removal Services, LLC to get an evaluation.

Life Cycle of Skunks in Richmond and Charlottesville, Virginia

Skunks in Richmond and Charlottesville Virginia are most famous for their foul smelling musk which they use in defense against predators and this adaptation alone has caused the skunk to become somewhat famous along with Pepe Le Pew and other fictional characters based on the skunk. Even though, many people know about the skunk in Richmond and Charlottesville, VA (more particularly its skunk spray), few people know about the skunks lifecycle.

Skunks in Richmond and Charlottesville are born in a den with about three to six other baby skunks (called kits). Their mother will watch over them in the den she dug out (usually burrowed out in soft areas of soil, trash piles, or under porches). Eventually the mother skunk will begin leaving the den with her kits to retrieve food at night (since skunks are nocturnal). After about twelve to fourteen weeks, the skunks will leave the den with their mother. The skunks will stay with their mother until they are fully developed or ready to mate (which can be up to a year after they are born).

The skunks in Richmond and Charlottesville, Virginia will begin looking for a mate in late winter to early spring. When the skunks mate, the male skunks will generally mate with more than one female skunk. On average it will take the female skunk anywhere from sixty to seventy days to give birth to her baby skunks (kits), which makes late spring to early summer the most common time for skunks to give birth. The female skunk will raise her kits by herself, the male skunk who mated with the female plays no role in raising the kits and may kill the kits if he gets the opportunity.

Virginia Professional Wildlife Removal Services, LLC provides skunk removal, skunk trapping, skunk control, skunk exclusion and skunk odor control in the Richmond and Charlottesville areas. We also handle all other types of animal wildlife removal problems. Contact us at (434) 270-0488 or toll-free at (888) 893-1975.

Skunk Gives Florida Couple Wake-up Call

PALM BAY, Fla., Feb. 6 (UPI) — A Florida couple received an early wake-up call when they heard something moving around under their bed and discovered a skunk, officials said.

“I shined it under the bed and there was one of them catpoles,” Odell Wadlington, of Palm Bay, said in a News 13, Orlando, report. “It was crazy.”

“Polecat” is slang for skunk. Odell called James Dean, a local wildlife trapper, to remove the animal.

“Went inside, they had the bedroom door closed,” Dean said. “They said the last place they saw it was under the bed.”

Dean found the skunk behind some furniture and he was sprayed before he could put the squirrel-sized animal in a container.

Dean said small animals could get into a home through dryer vents.

“People are running their dryers,” Dean said. “It’s putting off heat, so skunks know to come there.”

Wadlington went to work Thursday but was sent home.

“I had that brand on me,” he said of the odor. “He (the boss) didn’t want to deal with that.”

Dean was sent home from his part-time job as well.

“He said ‘Dude, can’t have you here,'” Dean said.
